ACTING FOR DANCERS

Musical Theatre Department

RICK SOUTHERLAND

Dean of Performing Arts

This class is the essential bridge between technical execution and dramatic necessity, designed to transform a skilled dancer into a compelling Dancing Actor. Taught by Rick Southerland, this course moves beyond choreography to focus on intentionality: how to use dance to drive the narrative and how to embody character throughout movement phrases. Students will learn critical skills such as understanding the emotional context of a scene, translating directorial notes into physical choices, and mastering stage presence so that every step, gesture, and transition is anchored in dramatic purpose. This is mandatory training for any dancer seeking professional work in musical theatre, opera, or physical ensemble roles.
